Preventing Van & Trailer Water Damage

Most water damage to shipments results from trailer and van leaks. The resulting claims can cost thousands of dollars and lead to dissatisfied customers facing potentially permanent loss of their household goods.

Regular pre-trip inspections and periodic maintenance checks save money and time. Even vehicles that have recently been serviced can still develop leaks. Prevent water damage claims using these tips:

  • Metal Roofs – Step inside during daylight and close the doors. If you see sunlight, water can get in.
  • Fiberglass Roofs – Spray water on the roof to confirm it’s watertight.
  • Right Front Corner – Inspect for holes, often caused by tree branches.
  • Truck Wash – Run empty vehicles through a wash to spot leaks.
  • Walls – Check for stains or exterior punctures that could indicate interior damage.
  • Door Seals – Use silicone protectant to keep seals flexible and effective.
  • Wet Pads – Don’t use or store wet pads near cargo. They can cause damage.
  • Storage – Avoid using vans or trailers for long-term storage.

If a tree limb or similar impact scrapes hard enough to damage or dislodge a clearance light cover, it likely caused roof damage as well. Schedule repairs and swap out equipment if possible.
